Every Tree Counts! Toronto's Urban Forest - Arthur Beauregard & Ruthanne Henry

Toronto's urban forest is composed of 10.2 million trees including 116 species representing a structural value of $7 billion. It provides multiple services to city residents including cleaner air and water, cooler temperatures, energy savings and higher property values. An estimated $60 million per year in ecological services are generated by Toronto's trees. With regular management, these benefits increase every year as trees continue to grow.
This presentation will describe the nature and benefits of Toronto's Urban Forest, and provide helpful tips about selecting and planting trees in your home landscape as well as caring for both newly planted and mature trees.

Hurricane Juan: How a Community Came Together - Helen MacLean

When hurricane Juan struck Halifax in 2003 the learning curve took a swift and illuminating jump forward.  No one living at that time had experience such gross destruction by nature. The generous donation received from all over the world to restore the Gardens was astounding. In one day more than one million dollars were raised to accomplish restoration and long needed improvements. Her talk will demonstrate how the funds were allotted and how the work was accomplished.

Square Foot Gardening - Mel Bartholomew

Mel invented the Square Foot Gardening Method to make it easier and more fun to garden, to eliminate the drudgery and hard work, to even out the excess harvest and to make gardening simple and interesting.  Studies tell us that the average US garden measures over 700 sq. ft. requiring much effort and labour to maintain. Mel will teach you how to easily eliminate 80% of that space, thus 80% of the work, 90% of the water, and 95% of the seeds, with the simple Square Foot Gardening Method and have fun doing it.
